It’s no secret that Hearthstone has been one of the biggest gaming success stories in recent years, as the card battler has become firmly established as one of Blizzard’s most popular multiplayer offerings. Now, the studio has announced that the game has amassed a player base of 70 million people.
Even taking into account that Hearthstone is a free-to-play game, that’s a pretty astounding figure. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Blizzard recorded more concurrent players than ever before on the release date of its latest expansion, Journey to Un’Goro.
Journey to Un’Goro for those that haven’t been following Hearthstone closely is the collectible card game’s fifth expansion, and adds 135 new cards to the mix along with some new mechanics. Among them is a new Adapt feature that allows minions to change based on certain game conditions and Quest cards, which require players use certain cards in a certain order in order to unlock new move sets, cards, and abilities.
To mark this occasion, Blizzard is giving players a small gift to show its appreciation. Anyone that logs into Hearthstone between now and the end of May will receive three free Journey to Un’Goro card packs, giving them a chance to check out some of the new cards that have been introduced to the game. Some free packs will also help players save some money, since collecting all of the Journey to Un’Goro collection is said to cost as much as $400, depending on players’ luck.
It’s true that Hearthstone is facing some difficulties in terms of player retention and overall revenue — but this news demonstrates that people still have a lot of interest in the game. It remains to be seen whether it’ll still be popular a year from now, or three years from now, but for the past three years, it’s certainly had a remarkable run.
Hearthstone is available now for PC and mobile devices.
