Since making its debut earlier this year, Conan Exiles has received a lot of heat for featuring the ability to modify the size of genitalia of the on-screen avatars that players create and utilize. This includes the private parts of men and woman alike, and it sounds like Europeans will be able to continue doing just that when the game arrives through Xbox One’s Game Preview Program. North American gamers, on the other hand, will instead be seeing their characters wearing corresponding undergarments to hide their physics-based shame.
This decision comes as a result of the separate rating boards for each region, with Conan Exiles receiving an “M for Mature” assessment in North America by the ESRB while Europe’s PEGI has slapped the title with an “18 and over” labelling. This is entirely a marketing decision from developer Funcom, as showcasing the genitalia in the region under ESRB’s watch would have prevented a broad release of the game there.
The community manager for Conan Exiles, Jens Erik, clarified this much during a recent stream of the title running on Xbox One. “The reason for this is if we included full nudity in Conan Exiles, this would have resulted in a more restrictive ESRB rating in North America which then might have prevented a broad release of the game,” clarified Erik. Fans can check out that stream below.
The arrival of Conan Exiles on Xbox One also signals the debut of the game’s first expansion, Frozen North. Fortunately for those eager to get their hands on the ice-based add-on, it’s completely free and will be made available across both Xbox One and PC versions of the game on August 16th. This means that players can jump into the newly added action right from the beginning of their adventure, although there are no details on whether the newfound cold will impact the uncensored appendages that inspired this article in the first place.
It’s unknown whether or not Conan Exiles will feature similar censorship if and when it releases for PlayStation 4, but it’s safe to say that this will likely be the case in order to ensure wide distribution.
Conan Exiles is currently available on Steam Early Access, and arrives for Xbox One through the console’s Game Preview Program on August 16, 2017.
